The American Sweetgum-Liquidambar styraciflua, is native to the eastern U.S but grows well throughout the U.S. They get their name from the yellow-green spherical flower clusters that form over the summer that over time turn into bristly "gum-balls." They can grow to heights of 100 feet. They are commonly used for commercial hardwoods and Native Americans would use the trees sap to make teas and to treat dysentery and other illnesses.
