Learn More:

Star Magnolia-Magnolia stellata grows to a height of 15 to 20 feet and can be grown as a shrub or tree. Its large white fragrant flowers bloom in early spring, making it susceptible to frost damage. Best grown in locations where it's protected from high winds and southern exposure. This cultivar is a native of Japan and is enjoyed in moonlight. Young trees have a smooth, shiny chestnut brown bark turning a silvery gray with age. It produces very showy, fragrant solitary white flowers with a pink tinge. Each flower has 12 to 18 petals (tepals) and is three to four inches across. It flowers before leaves emerge. Mature two inch fruit is a knobby cluster that opens to reveal reddish-orange seeds.
