Douglas Fir-Pseudotsuga menziesii

Learn More:

The Douglas Fir is in the Pine family and is native to western North America. Despite its common name, it is not a true Fir. In fact, it is in a class by itself with only four other species. This evergreen produces one inch long needles distributed all around the branch. The fruit, or cones, hang straight down from branches, and are enjoyed by small mammals. Hawks and owls roost in its branches. With a growth habit of about one foot a year, it is a desirable landscape tree. It also makes an ideal Christmas tree, known especially for holding its needles all season. In its native range in western forests, it is a major commercial tree for lumber electric poles.
