Flowering Dogwood-Cornus florida 'Cherokee Brave' features showy clusters of crimson flowers with white centers held atop the branches in mid-spring. It is considered a fast grower that requires well-draining, acidic soil and adequate moisture. They will mature to a height of 15 to 30 feet and a width of 25 to 35 feet, so be sure there is ample space for the tree to grow. It has forest green foliage which emerges burgundy in spring. The pointy leaves turn an outstanding brick red in the fall. It produces red berries from early to late fall. Dogwood usually grows 1 or 2 feet a year until it reaches its mature height. You can keep the tree a bit shorter by heading upright branches back by one-third each year, but keep in mind this may produce a tree with a greater width. Trees in the Cornus family are usually not as hardy as the shrub forms and range from USDA zone 4 to 8 or 9. Choose a site for your Dogwood that is well-drained but does not get extremely dry. Soil in high organic matter is best. Dogwood can be planted in full sun or partial shade, though partial shade is best, morning sun in particular. Dogwood can also be considered an understory tree.
