“Take Your Life Back” Book Distribution at Miami Correctional Facility

In February, Northview Church studied a self-help/spiritual book-turned-weekend series called “Take Your Life Back” by Stephen Arterburn and Dr. David Stoop. The information was practical and relevant for anyone struggling with unhealthy patterns in their lives. The book teaches God-honoring behavior and attitude changes, which made the church think, why not share these valuable books with others?

As a result, Northview Church attendees purchased 3,000 copies of “Take Your Life Back” to donate to offenders at Miami Correctional Facility in Bunker Hill, Indiana. Enough books were purchased for every offender to receive one – a donation valued at $18,540.

On May 30, Northview volunteers, staff and state dignitaries will visit every cell house to pass out books and encouraging notes from Northview attendees who donated the books.

Rob Carter, the commissioner of the Indiana Department of Correction, will be there to take part in the distribution.

“It’s great to have the leader of the state’s prison system supporting our efforts to invest in the lives of the offenders,” Jason Pongratz, multisite campus director at Northview Church, said. “It’s clear that he sees the greater purpose here.”

Miami Correctional Facility is Northview’s seventh campus and was established in August 2016. Every Sunday, the worship and message is streamed by video – the same that all other Northview campuses experience. The campus has an on-site Northview pastor, Rick Gilmore, and volunteer teams who come alongside about 140 offenders in attendance. The campus has even expanded to offer small groups and baptisms.

“We hope these books will inspire the offenders to take a fresh look at how to change their lives,” Pongratz said. “Ultimately, our goal is that these books help the offenders draw into a closer relationship with God.”

This post is entirely the opinion of this week’s writer and does not necessarily reflect the view of Northview Church as a whole.
